6 years ago, my friend on the right (Chana) posted this. I “liked” it, too… 6 years ago. I knew her because of my friend on the left, Kam, though we (the three of us) had gone to school together. I didn’t meet the woman in the center for another 8 months; we were introduced by my friend on the right and reconnected several years later by the machinations of the woman on the left. This is a photo of three of the most incredible and strong women I’ve ever known. I’ll miss you, Chana. I loved and do love you, not just for bringing me my fiancée (the woman in the center) but for everything you are. For your heart and kindness and fire and sarcasm and gumption and the giving and the passion and compassion that carried you through everything. These words are not enough and they do not do justice to the person you have been both to me and to the other women I love. This has been a rough week, rougher than expected, a bittersweet week. I’m grateful for the good news we had, of course, and I’m grateful to have known Chana and to know she will feel some measure of peace. Nothing is fair and I guess it’s not supposed to be but it sucks that it isn’t and the best of us don’t get to stay.
